Ok, I'm in the process of fixing my sisters computer. she had lots of malware and junk which was making her pc take 10-15 minutes to load up. I fixed that now I need to fix her cd drive (dual layer dvd burner). It will play music discs but not games or dvds. Anyone know how to fix this? I have tried to update the drivers and tried to clean it with a lens cleaner disc, niether fixed the problem.

These are the specs of her pc:

Intel Pentium 4 processor 519J,3.06GHz
Windows XP Home
512MB PC3200 DDR SDRAM
160GB hard drive
Double-layer DVD?R/RW combo drive with CD writer capabilities

Last problem her Desktop Icons are messed up I cant get rid of that blue color around the words plus they look messed up.

Color depth needs to be 32-bit, and then you need to enable drop shadows for icons (Right click my computer, properties, advanced, performance>settings, adjust for best appearance).

Do you have Active Desktop on? If so, disable it.

You can also try this:

1. Right click My Computer and click Properties.
2. On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Performance.
3. Click to clear the Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop check box, click Apply, and then click OK two times.

That usually means the drive is dead, or dying. They may work ok for somethings but not others when they start to fail, I've had that happen to me. Those supposed lens cleaning discs can actually destroy a disc drive and should only be used as a last ditch effort.

I suppose it wouldn't hurt to open the PC case, unplug the DVD drive blow on the connectors to remove any dust, and then plug it back in.

Thanks guys. I fixed all that I could. Luckily her pc is still under warranty from hp. I contacted them and they are going to replace the dvd burner.
