I had to download the Flash Player un-installer then close all browser windows then run the un-installer to get the updated 9.0.124.0 version to install correctly:

That is the recommended way to update Flash.

Yeah, i always use the uninstaller, before intalling new version.

Adobe has upgraded its Flash Player to fix seven vulnerabilities in the graphics and video software widely used for interactive Web pages and banner advertisements.

Adobe classifies the patches as "critical" and advises people upgrade to the latest version, 9.0.124.0. All of the vulnerabilities could allow a hacker to execute code on a machine.

It's the only one I know of. And they did either buyout or merge with Macromedia to license it.
