I have had several pop-ups and have not been able to remove them. I also noticed that it happens both in IE and Windows Explored. Which ever I run first after starting the computer. I also noticed that there are repeated attempts to access '85.255.118.27:80 and 85.255.118.26:80'. Hope this means something. Attached is the the HijackThis file...

Here is new hijack this file. I review several posted forums with your answers. I eliminated a couple of directory entries. However, not being an expert, not sure all has been eliminated. I will abide by your expertise to determine wheather all is well.....

Hello pulling hair,

Your HJT log does indeed appear clean of any remaining malware, but let's take a deeper look. Better safe then sorry they say :)

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Hello pulling hair,

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

C:\WINNT\system32\avifil.dll (file missing)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HijackThis.

Then please post back with a new HijackThis log, and an update on how your computer is running :)

Ran HijackThis and removed the indicated BHO entry successfully.
Here is new HijackThis scan showing entry removed.
Computer is running fine.
However, couple of thinsg I noted....
1) I have lost my 'Firewall' settings not sure which program removed the settings. Seems like ZoneAlarm was reset to 'default' settings....
2) I scanned the 'avifil' both with Symantec and AVG and both passed the file.
3) In reading thru forums, I noticed a suggestion on using a HOSTS file to eliminate certain sites. I tried to use it but seemed the system died(or perhaps slowed down to a crawl). I do have the 'DNS Client' service set to 'Manual' but does not help(I'm running Win2K). Any suggestions would help cause I would like to use this option to avoid certain sites and potentially reduce future virus infections.

Hello pulling hair :)

Quote

3) In reading thru forums, I noticed a suggestion on using a HOSTS file to eliminate certain sites. I tried to use it but seemed the system died(or perhaps slowed down to a crawl). I do have the 'DNS Client' service set to 'Manual' but does not help(I'm running Win2K). Any suggestions would help cause I would like to use this option to avoid certain sites and potentially reduce future virus infections.
Did you try this one: MVPS Hosts file? I included some instructions on using it near the end of my post, for you.

  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Click on the CleanUp! button
  • A list of tool components used in the Cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OtMoveit2 to reach the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  • Click Yes to begin the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Set a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
  • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
  • Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
  • Click "OK".
  • Click the "More Options" Tab.
  • Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
  • Winpatrol <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software

THANKS MUCH FOR YOUR HELP!... ;)

I will try your suggestions made on previous posts. I have tried "HOSTS Manager" but ultimately the size of the HOSTS file might be the underlying problem. I am connected via a wireless router and that might have some DNS implications.

I have run ZoneAlarms and Symantec for quite a while successfully but it goes to show that a virus will eventually find its way in somehow.

Again thks much for your help and I will start addressing your recommendations....
