I recently had to get a new tower with a new Hard Drive. I installed the old drive as a secondary drive and used Recuva to recover the files in Outlook Express. I saved the recovered files in a new folder on the new drive. However, I cannot get the files to open in a legible manner.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
There is no sign of the old Address Book. The folder on the old drive opens to show the current addresses!!

Have a look at DBExtract at $ 7.00 it is a good utility to have.

Thanks. I am trying a free dbx viewer but will note your suggestion as $7.00 seems a good buy.

The files cannot be opened as the type is not .dbk despite the extension. Do you haver any sugestions

Was the old drive formatted.
If it wasn't you should be able to copy and paste the .dbx files and address book over to the new drive to their proper locations overwriting the existing on the new drive.
They then should open in OE.
C:\Documents and Settings\"Username"\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book
C:\Documents and Settings\"Username"\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{573136D5-C434-41A4-A721-1E5C3C293657}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

The new Tower and its components do not match the Old drive. I am a novice so I can't explain why it works as a secondary drive. To find OE on it I have to use the PROGRAMS folder. I used Recuva to get access to the contents and stored the recovered material on the new drive in a new folder.
Following a suggestion from a friend, I had tried changing the address in the STORAGE folder of OE in the new drive to the address of the folder on that drive having the recovered letters. I nearly collapsed when the new letters then got lodged in a sub-folder at that address and would not open; nor did the older letters.
I used Restore and recovered the address of the new drive as I could not reverse the change otherwise. I got back the OE but no letters.
Using the program http://www.snapfiles.../dbxviewer.html
I got the new letters to open but had to store them in My Documents. The old letters were inaccessible to the program as they were described as having an unknown format. They bear the RECUVA logo. The names are in regular text but the content of each is in squares and numbers.
I tried to e-mail a file from the recovered group and it came as an attachment opening with the same gibberish in Notepad.
