Has anyone used Windows Defender? How does it compare to SpyBot or AdAware?

used it. i'd say it sucks period. stay away from it! use AVG Anti-Spyware, SUPERAntiSpyware, Spybot(Optional) and an Anti-Virus of choice. Avast!, AVG, ClamWin or AntiVir

Why do you say that?

I use Windows Defender and AVG Free.

I also use WinPatrol and I was so impressed with it I purchase the PLUS update.

I'd pretty much agree with all that (including 'Defender sucks'). Personally use AVG Free AV, Spyware Blaster and Spybot (for it's immunise and tools more than its scanning). Don't have any spyware scanner installed anymore as I never get any spyware but used to be SuperAntispyware.

Windows Defender gets mixed, generally negative, reviews, it apparently misses a lot of stuff...that is just what I read. Some of the freeware apps appear to do the job better.

I use these apps, all are free unless you choose to donate; none are "hogs".

Active protection category:

AVG Antivirus
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

AVG Antispyware (active?, don't know, the trial period has expired)
from
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/download-free-...pyware/us/frt/0

SpyBot S&D...ver 1.5 runs slower than ver 1.4, but it has more features. The Tea Timer in 1.5 takes a lot of memory, but is worth it, IMHO. Both versions are available at FileHippo:
from
http://filehippo.com...search_destroy/

SpyWareBlaster

SpyWareGuard, the oldest spyware app in the known universe. Uses quite a bit of memory. Never updates. Doesn't seem to do much (actually does). I don't recommend it, but do use it. Ya gotta love it.

Comodo Firewall, ver 2.4 I think, not ver 3, couldn't get that to work although others on this forum had better luck.
-----------------------------------------

Passive, or on demand only category:

AdAware

XoftSpySE
from
http://www.paretolog...xray/?uid=bsxh5

SuperAntiSpyware. Trial period expired, so not active now.

--------------------------------------------------

Rootkit finders, on demand only:

AVG Antirootkit

F-Secure Blacklight

IceSword

Rootkit Revealer from Sysinternals

Rootkit Buster from Trend Micro.

Sophos AntiRootkit

Rootkit Unhooker
from
http://antirootkit.c...it-Unhooker.htm

but you probably should get the current version quickly, Microsoft bought'em:
read here:
http://www.antirootkit.com/blog/2007/12/23...f-to-microsoft/

---------------------------------------

Virtualization, sort of:

Sandboxie

Returnil

Powershadow...no longer free
The SLIM version is always released a bit after any new version; when it is it will be HERE :-)

I use Defender and AVG Anti-Spyware free. Defender is a second line against the well known stuff, while AVG picks up the less known stuff.
