While using msconfig on my XP Pro system I inadvertently "lost" my restore points by
using Diagnostic startup. So, I cannot use the system restore feature, and the system
only boots in the diagnostic mode ...

My question is: will the "Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)"
really be the LAST GOOD one, or am I left with the last, corrupted configuration?

Can my last CCleaner registry backup help me out of this?

Thanks

Try to boot into safe mode and changing the boot options with ms config. To boot in safe mode repeatedly press F8 when you start your computer. you will get a menu to choose safe mode.

I will try your suggestions this weekend. Thanks.

It's good to backup the registry with ERUNT once a while. It's really simply to use.
