F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

Ouch, that's the problem. You can't just delete it either, it won't go away, me and friend removed it from his computer a few days ago. It wasn't easy.

Please download Nailfix from here:
http://users.pandora...chy/nailfix.zip
Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.co.../safemode.shtml

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.bat. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Then please run Spybot Search & Destory or MS AntiSpyware (works good too).

Then please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log.

No offense guys but you're not helping, kinda adding extra work. Leave it to the pros. ;)

rridgely, those are good to remove but scanners can often fix that. It shows in the post not many (if any) scanners were run.

TwistedMetal, same deal as above. That will add extra work for L0seR, much of which can be avoided. Just scanning over it I see other pieces of malware and viruses/worms. Just stopping Nail.exe alone won't fix it, there are still those other bad pieces.

L0seR...

First, download this Anti Malware Package, it contains everything you need to effectively clean your computer.

Next, refer to this PC Maintenance website, as it will tell you the settings you need and everything to effectively clean your computer. Then you can post your HijackThis log here.

That has to be done to remove it. Ad-Aware, Spybot, and MS AntiSpyware will not remove it. You have to "manually" remove it or it will keep coming back. That is the only thing I could do to remove it on my firends PC.

It's an online scanner. It's safe. Trend Micro is the company that makes PC-Cillin. It just means that someone went to and used Trend Micro's "HouseCall" service, which is an online virus scanner (similar to Symantec's).

Might want to use Firefox. After you get Firefox you can safely remove the Google toolbar.

ATI's Catalyst Control Center is rather junky. It's safe to remove, I recommend their Display Driver, Control Panel, WDM Integrated Driver. Found here.

Get yourself Real Alternative and Quicktime Alternative. These work far better and aren't as weedlike.

Uninstall Viewpoint Media Player too. A lot of what you had in startup was just unneeded junk.

Ah, Aurora again :) Removed it by myself.
Found all entries of Aurora, go to Safe Mode, scan with ALL scanners you have(Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, M$ AntiSpyware, XoftSpy, ...), then press CTRL + ALT + DEL, close explorer.exe, close all weird names, go to C:\Windows folder, delete all those Aurora things(wfsqfzqt.exe's) & Nail.exe - find Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe and delete it :)

I'm struggeling with the exact same thing at this moment L0ser... :(
There is indeed more than just the nails.exe

Ran too many spyware, a/v programs and other fixes and what-not to list, but nothing fixed it and nothing identified which file is actually causing the registry entries to reappear and the random exe's (83.456 bytes in size) in windows\system32\ to be generated.

All files in my PC startup section, as far as I can remember, seem to be 'legitimately' there, so it looks to me as if it latched itself onto a "valid" exe somehow.
As last resort I've now just disabled absolutely everything from my PC startup (exe's and dlls), and lo and behold the problem is gone now.

Im now in the process of adding everything back (only takes 20 or so reboots :D ) to isolate which file it was...

Good luck to you anyway, I feel your pain! :(

Sorry - modified too many times.....It proved impossible to fix from the HJT log anyway; but thanks for the offer :)
A/V = Nod32.

Apologies to everyone for jumping in, but out of curiosity, L0ser, the thread-title says "aurora.exe" but I dont see that anywhere in the HJT log you posted... Is this file actually involved at all?

Reason why I am asking is that when I read your posts and HTJ logs I found quite a few similarities to what I found on my PC the last two days;
- The file c:\windows\system32\cwbpuue.exe under "running processes" to name one,
- and F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
I found on my PC as well, to name a second one.
(This is what actually drew my attention to this thread)

For me, it turned out that -whatever it was that I had- had latched itself onto ad-watch.exe. As soon as I disabled it, I was able to remove all registry entries, kill the unwanted running processes and everything....All clean now.

If my problem is completely different from what you have, then please forgive me for posting and ignore the posts :)
If it is the same thing, you may very well end up killing all running processes to eliminate the infected one..
Good luck either way.
