[1984]

Having the same problems on my desktop as i am on my laptop. Also ran superantispyware, CCleaner, avast antivirus, and spybot which found a couple trojans, keylogger, and some spyware all of which ended up getting deleted. just thought a log look for piece of minds sake was in order. Thanks all!

You may want to print this out, or save it to your desktop as a Notepad file, as you will not have Internet access while in SAFE mode.

Set Your Computer to Show All Files

• Click Start.
  
• Click My Computer.
  
• Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  
• Select the View Tab.
  
• Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
  
• Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended).
  
• Click Yes to confirm.
  
• Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
  
• Click OK.

In addition, go to Start, Search. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:

O23 - Service: Windows Genuine Advantage (svchost) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe (file missing)
Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.

Stop, Disable and Delete A Service
Go to Start, Run OR Start, Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt and type services.msc and click OK.
Under the Extended Tab, Scroll down and find the service.

Windows Genuine Advantage

Click once on the service to highlight it.
Right-Click on the service. Click on Properties
Select the General tab.
Next to Service Status, click Stop.
Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side of the Start-up Type box.
From the drop-down menu, click on Disabled
Click Apply , then OK

Delete the Service
Open HiJackThis. Click on Config, Misc Tools, Delete an NT Service
Type svchost in the space provided and click OK
The program will ask you to REBOOT --- Accept.

REBOOT into SAFE MODE by Tapping F8 repetitively as soon as it beeps, and choose Safe Mode from the menu.
Sign in to your usual account.
Using Windows Explorer (My Computer), double click on C: drive, then double click on the Windows folder.
At the top choose View, Details then scroll down, find and DELETE the following file (if it still is present):

C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe <== DO NOT DELETE THIS FILENAME FROM ANY OTHER FOLDER LOCATION OR YOU WILL BREAK YOUR SYSTEM

Post a New HiJackThis Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

Thank you for such a detailed and easy to follow reply. Here is my updated log.

Just a question. Will this affect my Windows Genuine Advantage at all? Because I am using a legitimate version of Windows XP, and would hate to have it not get updated because of a Trojan. Also, what would you recommend as an anti trojan software to keep from getting this sort of thing again? Thanks!

Using Internet Explorer, Please Do an Online Scan with Kaspersky WebScanner.
Go here to run an online scanner from Kaspersky.

• Click on "Kaspersky Online Scanner"
  
• A new smaller window will pop up. Press on "Accept". After reading the contents.
  
• Now Kaspersky will update the anti-virus database. Let it run.
  
• Click on "Next">"Scan Settings", and make sure the database is set to "extended". And check both the scan options. Then click OK.
  
• Then click on "My Computer", and the scan will start.
  
• Once finished, save the log to your Desktop as filename KAV.txt

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Please post the contents of the file KAV.TXT located on your desktop.

Hello Askey127,

The scan ran for about 2.5 hours and then got hung up. Not sure why. It was stuck at 5%. I have included what it finished here, but is there a suggestion to ensure the scan can complete? I have three external hard drives (500 gb, 2-250 gb) that have about a total of 700 gbs of info on them. plus the 40 gb internal drive. i assumed you wanted everything scanned. Is there anything specific you need to see scanned? Or just the internal drive? Thanks!

Ok, I got the whole scan to run. Not sure exactly why it wasnt moving along, but i was getting a little triangle message in my tray that was saying "information lost from drive" and im missing some stuff that i had transfered between hard drives. no biggies, still backed up. i think this is all to do with my experimenting with downloads that i shouldnt have......when will we learn. but curiousity got the best of me. anyways, took all night, but heres the log and a new hijackthis log:

Your J:\drive has serious infections. You should reformat the J:\ partition, whether it is a USB drive or a HD partition. Don't copy any files off it or you may transfer the garbage as well.
Your machine looks to be OK except for the J:\drive. If you have burned CDs of files from those sites, watch out.

Don't EVERshow up looking for malware help with a machine having Cracks on it.
All cracks and crack sites make their money from Users downloading infections to generate income for the purveyors from the newly infected machines.

And don't Multi-Post. Katana, TeMerc, myself, and many other helpers in this field all know each other.
If you do so, it wastes our time as volunteers, and treats us as if your time were much more valuable than ours.
As such, you can understand how we might be inclined to ignore your post.

For your future protection, After you take care of the J:\drive, not before:

Disable WinXP System Restore
Disable your System Restore to remove malware files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing them. The only way to erase these files is to temporarily disable System Restore. You will lose all previous Restore points, including those likely to be infected, and a new Restore Point will be established..
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- On the System Restore tab, put a Check mark in the Turn Off System Restore check box.
- Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
If you are not prompted to reboot, do it on your own.

After the Reboot,
Enable WinXP System Restore
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- On the System Restore tab, Clear the Check mark beside the Turn Off System Restore check box.
- Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
The Disable/Re-enable System Restore sequence is not to be done regularly, but only as a Special Case after the removal of malware.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites to your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from accidentally running or downloading known malicious programs. Available from http://www.javacools...areblaster.html
After the installation, click Download Latest Protection Updates. When it finishes, click Enable All Protection.

A HOSTS file is a big list of bad web sites. The list has a specific format, a specific name, just HOSTS (no file extension), and a specific location. Your machine always looks at that file in that location before connecting to a web site to verify the address. So the HOSTS listing can be used to "short circuit" a request to a bad website by giving it the address of your own machine.

Whatever list your HOSTS file has will be used by your browser. You can open the HOSTS file with Notepad and look at it.
In Windows XP, it is located in this folder ==> C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\

Download and Install a HOSTS File
A Hosts file is a plain text file which prevents your computer from inadvertently connecting to malware, spyware and adware sites by redirecting the connection request back to your own machine address (127.0.0.1). It is a very effective defense system.
If you are part fo a business network, if you are on AOL, or if you use Norton to scan e-mail, be sure to read the special instructions in the tutorial below..

Be sure to disable the service "DNS Client" FIRST to allow the use of large HOSTS files without slowdowns.
If this isn't done first, the next reboot may take a VERY LONG TIME.
This is how to do it. First be sure you are signed in as a user with administrative privileges:

Agree to the license.
On the next page, to the right side of where it says "Download Estimates, right click on the underlined word "Hosts Manager" choose "Save Target As" and download the installer Hosts20setup.exe to your desktop.
Double click the Installer on your desktop and let it Install the Hosts Manager

After the installation is complete, click on the Hosts Manager icon on your desktop. (You can delete the Hosts Switch icon).
When the manager comes up, got to the left pane, click Download.
It will load 80,000 lines or more. When it finishes, also in the left pane, click Replace, and then Save.
You can use this manager to handle your HOSTS file download, edits, and most any other HOSTS issue.

If you have a firewall, you may have to give permissions at various times to Unlock the present default HOSTS file and install the new one.

Thanks for the help here. I do have a couple of questions.

1-Is it at all possible to clean/save my J drive? It is a 500 gb external drive that I have everything on-documents, photos, music, movies....about 400 gb of stuff. Almost everything on it has been recently transfered to my external 250 gb (F) and (I) drives. So its curious to me that the (J) drive is so infected, yet the other two drives did not come up as infected. In fact, I didnt notice them in the Kaspersky scan at all. But it would be a huge pain to have to reformat and then, assuming the other drives are clean as you say, transfer everything back to it.

2-The (J) drive is FAT32. Is it possible to reformat to NFTS as I understood that this is faster? Or am I mistaken?

3-Sorry about posting my log on a few forums. Wasn't trying to annoy anyone or waste anyones time. I was just a bit desperate as I seemed to have messed up both my computers at once. I have totally learned my lesson here. Stick to the sites I know. Once again I apologize.

4-I already have Spyware blaster installed. I also put in AVG antispyware and Superantispyware, and already had HOSTS files. Should I put in the Bluetack hosts files instead of, or as well as?

5-Ignoring the rest of what I posted above, if I reformat my (J) drive and follow your instructions above, will I have a clean computer once more?

6-What specifically is the malware on my computer? Is it stealing my information, slowing me down, or what? I am unclear on the ramifications of it.

You should download the Bluetack HOSTS. It's much bigger and more thorough.

OK, let's try this. You need to at the very least do this:
Delete these folders COMPLETELY Don't try to save anything.

J:\Computer Programs\Downloads and Cracks (Untested)\
J:\Computer Programs\Blazing Tools Perfect Keylogger\

After successfully deleting those folders, Empty the Recycle bin

With the J:\ drive connected, do the following

Disable WinXP System Restore
Disable your System Restore to remove malware files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing them. The only way to erase these files is to temporarily disable System Restore. You will lose all previous Restore points, including those likely to be infected, and a new Restore Point will be established..
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- On the System Restore tab, put a Check mark in the Turn Off System Restore check box.
- Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
If you are not prompted to reboot, do it on your own.

After the Reboot,
Enable WinXP System Restore
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- On the System Restore tab, Clear the Check mark beside the Turn Off System Restore check box.
- Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
The Disable/Re-enable System Restore sequence is not to be done regularly, but only as a Special Case after the removal of malware.

Using Internet Explorer, Please Do an Online Scan with Kaspersky WebScanner.
Go here to run an online scanner from Kaspersky.

• Click on "Kaspersky Online Scanner"
  
• A new smaller window will pop up. Press on "Accept". After reading the contents.
  
• Now Kaspersky will update the anti-virus database. Let it run.
  
• Click on "Next">"Scan Settings", and make sure the database is set to "extended". And check both the scan options. Then click OK.
  
• Then click on "My Computer", and the scan will start.
  
• Once finished, save the log to your Desktop as filename KAV.txt

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Please post the resulting KAV.TXT

Ok, here goes. I downloaded those Hosts files. Very easy to use. Thanks for the link! I deleted all the folders you said to get rid of. Gone, done, deleted. Then I cleared the restore points as per your instructions. Then I ran Spybot Search and Destroy which found nothing. Then I ran Superantispyware which found nothing. Then I ran Avast Antivirus which found nothing. I then ran AVG anti spyware which found three files, which i deleted. Ran it again and it came up clean. Then I ran Kaspersky which has the attached log. Ran A squared anti trojan which has the attached log. Then i also included my hijackthis log which is attached as well.

I hope this is enough information. And thanks again for all the help!

Your logs look clean at this point.
Most trojans these days are designed specifically to STEAL information - Account numbers, UserID's, passwords, and anything else saleable for purposes of Identity or cash theft.

You should be good to go. The Reformat issue on J:\ is still up to you.
