Well, my new PC came pre-installed with many things (i.e. MS Office) etc, but even though it has dual core processors and 1GB RAM, it still takes ages when loading (at the windows logo screen - it will load the blue bar maybe 16 times). Once it reaches the welcome screen, it loads quickly. Another annoying thing, it also askes me to choose what operating system I want loaded, "Windows XP" or "Windows Recovery". It gives me 27 seconds to give a response. Now obviously I just want Windows XP loaded, but I don't particularly want to press the enter button every single time, so how do I change the time to maybe 3-4 seconds?

Hi DJ

If this is a new system then Id suggest you contact the company that supplied it to you if you feel its taking too long to boot as its very unlikely to be malware related, you could go through all the steps of running scans and the system file checker (sfc /scannow) but I doubt it will help with the time it takes to get to the Welcome screen,

For the boot options screen. You can change the timeout setting using the system configuration option's (msconfig) BOOT.INI tab and you could also set the option for the default operating system and the timeout option by right clicking My Computer > Properties > Advanced > then click Settings on the Start up and Recovery area which is explained in the first link below but take your time and consider making a backup of the boot.ini file first which is explained on the Microsoft link as mistakes can make the system unbootable.

Thanks, I changed it to 5 seconds. It only loads that blue bar 9 times now, so it has definitely become quicker. I think that was also down to removing 300MB using CCleaner. :)
