My Adobe Reader 7.0.8 keeps trying to update itself, but it then comes up with a message stating that it can't update because it can't remove the previous version of Adobe Reader 8.1.

I've tried removing Adobe entirely from my system, but I can't get the last files from version 7.0.8 to delete. When I then visit the Acrobat site and try to install version 8.1 again, I get the same message about version 8.1 - even though I don't think I have version 8.1 installed in the first place.

So I guess my questions are, how do I completely delete version 7.0.8, and how do I also make sure that any trace of version 8.1 is also removed before I start the installation progresss again from scratch?

Thanks for this.

Part of the problem seems that I can't remove two of the updates. In "Add/Remove Programs", it says "This update cannot be removed".

It looks like your problem is not uncommon. You may find information or help at this thread at Adobe Forums

Dump that 5000 LBS piece of junk and go with Foxit. Adobe Reader never gets used on any of my machines any more.

If you get your problem sorted out Canary, and you like Adobe, which I do, there's an Adobe 8.1 Lite version available here, which you can save to disk, and install from your desktop.

Adobe 8.1 Lite:
