My wife is a Mac user and I've been secretly jealous of the Retina MBP I bought her back in March. (screen is awesome) With the new OSX update I was even more jealous when I saw she could send SMS messages using her computer. However I just don't like OSX despite the cool features. I don't hate Win 8 but it was easier to justify a switch with the path MS was on with windows(tablet/touch focus). Now that it looks like 10 will be PC focused again I may just stay put on Windows. I just got back from a MS Store and I now have my eye on a new lenovo thinkpad yoga. Going to wait for windows 10 to make up my mind. Managing SMS on multiple devices, I've used DeskSMS in the past. It's $5/yr so it's not free, but it forwards all of your recieved text messages to Google Talk, so you can view them using any XMPP application on the desktop, or by logging into your Gmail and using the 'chat' feature, which is nice. I tried Textber as a public beta, but it didn't function well for me and I think it has a much steeper subscription price now that it's released. For iOS I'm not sure about what apps can forward SMS without it being iMessage, but I wouldn't be surprised if they exist (even if you need to be Jailbroken). Google Talk always felt like the best solution for me personally, YMMV. I use Windows 8 on my desktop which is decidedly non-touch screen, so I can't speak for those. I was never a heavy start menu user (I launch my programs from the run command for the most part - I even wrote an application to simplify the process of setting up programs to launch this way) so I don't miss that in the slightest either. That being said, I don't think I've ever been pulled into the Settings app, I always use Control Panel (quickly accessed with WIN+X, P) when changing system settings. Windows 10 IMO is a cleaner Windows 8. There are a lot of design tweaks (less chrome by default, more (tasteful) animations) that are nice and the system itself is not resource heavy (my VM boots it with 0.8GB of memory used) winapp2.ini additions thread winapp2.ini github Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

That's in a VM without doing a clean boot or anything (all default services/start up items), I got Windows 7 down to about the same point towards my end-of-use by disabling a lot of the system components I don't personally use (Windows Image Acquisition, Print Spooling, a lot of the networking services, etc) so I imagine that a stripped boot on Windows 10 can be even less resource hungry, and of course this is a technical preview, so things could still change drastically (in either direction) winapp2.ini additions thread winapp2.ini github Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I recognized the team who made it but I'm not sure I would want to forward all my SMS through their servers, which is how that seems to work. $5 a year is a great price though, so I may give it a shot for a little while. Still not as nice as what Apple has set up. When my wife's phone rings she can answer it on her laptop, ipad, phone. She can send messages from any device and it all works seamlessly. Its pretty cool. I like the idea of plugging in my phone when I get home and using my ipad/computer to handle everything. Yeah, I'm a little disappointed that Hangouts hasn't turned into the Google Cross-Platofrm iMessage truth be told, I would love a seamless experience like iMessage without having to use iOS (there was an allegedly working hack to dial into iMessage without using iOS a while back but I don't think it got far). If there's an iOS XMPP App, you can probably use that to connect to your Google Talk account on your iPad and send/recieve messages there. But hey, that's what you guys delve into. I like toys But seriously, Windows 8 is literally Windows 7 sans Aero Glass and the start menu, +30% faster give-or-take. Tasgandy Posted November 13, 2014 Share Posted November 13, 2014 Through my Volunteering duties I was being asked to advise/help out to many Windows 8 users with their issues so I thought as a OLD XP Pro & Win 7 Home (32bit) user I should move to Windows 8 and find out just what all the problems/fuss was all about. I will admit I was not looking forward to using Win 8 on a regular basis. (Touch screen which I have to use whilst volunteering BUT NOT at home for me) Following an OEM New Micro ATX build in a Corsair Carbide Air 240 Mini Cube Case/Gigabyte GA-Q87M-MK MB/i5 CPU/and installation of 64bit Win 8.1 then the update to 8.1.1 I must say I'm liking the changes between Ver 8.0 and Ver 8.1.1. and enjoying learning some of the tweaks now available. Very surprised that my old MS Office Pro 2003 and other 32bit SW seems to work exceptionally well. Sorry login123 I've tossed my XP Pro as I've installed Ubuntu 14.04LTS (64bit) over the old XP box. Now using Ubuntu/Win 7/Win 8.1.1 & an old Mac 10.4.11 laptop So I must say that I'm looking forward to Win 10 release sometime next year if for no other reason other than the final differences between the versions.
