Defraggler is not defraging

I have windows 7 ultimate 64 bit. I have a 2 terabyte hard drive split into 2 drives. The main drive C is not defragging, I don't defrag the other one as its a storage drive and doesn't need to be. It says its about 46% defragged when it starts and it will defrag a couple of files but still remain at 46% fragmented. I have done the exclusions like it says on this forum, but to no avail. I also tried to uninstall and reinstall, and even used ccleaner to get rid of the registry files and temp files prior to reinstalling. I am at a loss here as to what to do. Please help thank you.

Defraggler replaced windows defragger. So that would be a no.

What I meant was does Windows defragger still work on your machine if the option to repace Windows defragger is unticked?

Also if you boot into Windows Safe Mode does Piriform Defraggler complete then?

Can you complete a defrag using Defraggler portable?

Windows defragger wont even open, even after unchecking the box. So no it doesn't work.

I haven't tried to boot into safe mode to defrag, I will try that see if that works.

And I don't know what defraggler portable is.

If it helps my pc specs are as follows:

16gigs of kingston ddr 3 ram

sabertooth 990fx r2 motherboard

amd 8 core 3.5 ghz fx8320 black edition processor

NVidia 650fx video card

western digital 2 terabyte harddrive

The portable build is here

https://www.piriform.com/defraggler/builds

Info on it here

Did you reboot after unticking 'use instead of windows defragger' ?

Do you know how to run a system file check? (sfc)

I cannot use portable as I don't have a usb stick.

I ran defraggler in safe mode and it defragged without issue, although the drive map seems to be malfunctioning because it shows a lot of fragmented files, but the readout says there is zero. If this is going to be the only way to use defraggler I will not be using it anymore, because having to boot into safe mode every time I want to defrag (which is once a week) is just nuts.

I am pretty sure its not my computer, because my husband told me that defraggler does not work on his computer either. His computer just got a fresh copy of windows 7 pro 64 bit put on it and defraggler wont defrag his computer either. Windows defragger works fine on his computer.

And I did reboot after unticking the box to replace window defrag.

I will run a system file check and see if that comes up with anything. Edit: I ran the scan it came up with nothing. I figured it wouldn't as this harddrive is less then a year old.

Hello pinky6968 - I'm going to describe something that happened on my Windows 8 machine quite some time ago, and I want you to check and see if you have the same problem I had. Open Defraggler and hit the "Analyze" button. Then examine the drive map, looking for the light brown section that represents pagefile.sys, the Windows paging file. Is it a single unbroken line, or is it broken into two segments? In my case, it had somehow split into two sections. The result was that Defraggler reported 39% disk fragmentation all the time, even immediately after I had finished defragmented Windows C:\ drive.

To fix this, you're going to have to access your virtual memory settings, uncheck the box marked "Automatically manage page file size for all drives", then check the box marked "No paging file" and click the "Set" button. Windows will complain that it needs at least 400MB to store memory crash dumps, just ignore the warning and proceed. After doing this, you will have to reboot your machine to enable the change. After the reboot, open Defraggler, do another analysis, and see if the light brown section has disappeared, and the high percentage of disk fragmentation along with it. If so, proceed to defrag the disk using the "Defrag" option, not "Quick Defrag".

After defragmenting, go back into your virtual memory settings and check the original box marked "Automatically manage page file size for all drives", then reboot. The next time you open Defraggler and perform an analysis, the light brown section should appear as a single unbroken line on the drive map.

Start every day with a smile and get it over with. - W.C. Fields

Hi pinky,

Just so you know, you don't need to put portable apps on a USB stick.

Admittedly this is the norm, to truly make them portable.

But you can simply download the portable build of DF and save it anywhere on your hard drive, for example, and run it from that location.

Backup now & backup often.
It's your digital life - protect it with a backup.
Three things are certain; Birth, Death and loss of data. You control the last.
