File overwritten

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I've just downloaded Recuva to try and get a file i accidentally deleted from my SD card. I haven't added anything onto this card since that happened, but now I am getting a message that says: "This file is overwritten with D:\PRIVATE\FILEMNG.DAT". What does that mean, and can I still recover my file? It is a photo, jpeg format.

I can still recover other files though, from the start of the year, which have been deleted off the SD card since, and many more photos have been taken in between those ones, and this one I'm trying to get back. So I'm not sure what the error is. How am I able to get these other files back, except the one that I want, which was only erased about 12 hours ago.

It means that the data clusters the directory points to are being, or have been, used for another file. Your original data is unrecoverable by following these clusters. I'm not exactly sure what the cause is, possibly due to the cluster chains in the file allocation tables being modified on file deletion.

You could try a deep scan. If the data is in one fragment then it can possibly be found and recovered. If it is in multiple fragments then recovery is not possible without specialist help.
