You should see the little notification down by your clock which will say '''Get Windows 10''. It's to reserve your upgrade.

More info about it all here

I will wait a bit before installing Win 10. I assume it will stiil have a number of (serious) bugs. I am still happy with Win 7. I also got the (system tray icon) message.

Not free if you wait too long

I read somewhere the free upgrade period is limited to a year after the initial release of W10.

Backup now & backup often.

When you reserve, you can confirm your device is compatible with Windows 10. Between reservation and when your upgrade is ready, the files you need for the upgrade will be downloaded to your PC to make the final installation go more quickly. Then, when your upgrade is ready after July 29, 2015, you get a notification that lets you get started with your upgrade.

(let's hope they don't put them in a temp area !!! j/k)

So wait...if I download my free copy on day one but don't install it (activate it) until day 367* it's still free?

(*367 because 2016 is a leap year, but that brings up what Microsoft defines as a "year from release" be it calendar or call a year three-hundred-sixty-five days and does the last day of the year term equal a day you can or cannot get it free)

Note that for Win 7 Home Premium and Win 8.1 Home Premium, Windows Updates are mandatory on Windows 10. You won't have the option to turn them off.

Win 7 pro and Win 8.1 pro will have the ability to decide when to download and install them.

Please also read here especially the paragraphs 'Important notes' and 'Feature deprecation section'.

It only shows in the taskbar if you have KB3035583 installed.

Can you hide this update, KB3035583?

For my part, I'll wait until Sandboxie works properly on win 10 before considering an upgrade.

They're working on it:

The CCleaner SLIM version is always released a bit after any new version; when it is it will be HERE :-)

Pssssst: ... It isn't really a cloud. Its a bunch of big, giant servers.

There is nothing is this targeted box where I can select "Cancel reservation". I tried everything, and even that upper left 3-barred thingy. Looks like I'm stuck with 10 whether I change my mind or not.

Thanks Nergal. I did just that. ;)

I've hidden these as well. They're all listed as Optional and have been adding up ever since I did that W10 thing earlier yesterday. Must be the 'torrent seeds' you mentioned in your post. I've got a large HD, no problem to me.

Oops, one Optional became a Recommended while I captured that pic. This may be tricky.

Heh, the Recommended one is the infamous KB3035583 one. Nice try, MS.

got another question about windows 8.1 update related to this second last contribution ...

b47078-1433776292.jpg

b32553-1433776313.jpg

this was the folder after update from w8 to w8.1 on c:\

i have copied it to another partition for safety

--> can i take this folder to create my own "windows 8.1 64" dvd?

(an installation DVD is better than a recovery partition / DVD)

Interesting detail:

“Reserve” your copy of Windows 10 and your Windows computer will automatically download Windows 10 in bits and pieces before the release date. When Windows 10 is good to go, you won’t have to download a massive installer from Microsoft at the same time everyone else does. It’s a bit like preloading a game or movie before the release date.
