BSOD when starting defraggler free (2.20) on Sandisk SSD

Recommended Posts

Hello

I've just cloned a HDD to a 480gb Sandisk SSD and replaced the said HDD in my windows 7 ultimate Dell PC. Defraggler worked perfectly on the HDD but now BSOD on the SSD. I've uninstalled and re-installed but this just freezes the system. Otherwise the system is working well. I've installed a Samsung SSD on a different PC. and defraggler works well with that system. Any suggestions?

first up, there is absolutely no performance gain in running a defrag process on a SSD.

in fact, the wear levelling mechanics in the firmware of the SSD should actually make sure all cells are equally written to, so in fact, SSD's tend to have high fragmentation.

we shouldn't even think of it as 'fragmentation', that's just a left-over terminology of the HDD era.

TRIM is all a SSD needs.

but as to your BSOD, does the second line of the BSOD give an error message/number?

or at the bottom of the BSOD, is a filename mentioned?

Hello mta,

thank you for your reply.  I understand that indeed there is no point in defragmenting an SSD drive but defraggler also has an Optimise function for SSDs - so that is useful.  Also I use the SSD as my C:Drive which contains the OS and application/program files.  I keep all my Data on a separate HDD so that is why I want to use defraggler.

Regarding the BSOD issue - as I said in my original post since re-installing defraggler I don't get the BSOD BUT the system freezes and I have to use the big off button.

  • 4 weeks later...

My laptop is a dell XPS M1330 circa 2009

It runs windows vista home premium sp2

I have run defraggler on this laptop since 2009 and with good success

On march 23rd my hard drive began showing many bad blocks, this was a 7200 rpm HItachi 220GB drive.

I replaced the HItachi drive with a new SCANDISK SSD PLUS 240GB

REinstalled system using a macrium image from 2012 of a clean windows install. Ran all updates and added current apps

When I started defraggler it ran fine but it checked upadtes and told me I had 2.12 and the latest was 2.21. I let it installl 2.21.
Started 2.21 BSOD

tested a few older versions of defraggler and settled on 2.16 which ran ok.

I wanted defraggler for defragging free space on my external USB WD My Passport Ultra 500GB where I store Macrium images.

I know I do not need to use defrag on the SSD drive.

Further testing

######## Reinstalled the Hitachi drive

installed and tested each version of defraggler from 2.12 to 2.21.

Installed fine
analyze worked
defrag worked

######## Reinstalled the Scandisk SSD PLus 240GB

installed and tested each version of defraggler from 2.12 to 2.21. 2.17 through 2.21 had problems

Installed fine
Failed to BSOD when started

######## Loaded a WinPE 3, and a WinPE 5 version from USB

INstalled and tested 2.21

SSD drive partition showed and could be accessed

Installed fine
analyze worked
defrag worked

Summary:
installer works
runs ok even with SSD in system
Can not start on a partition from the SSD drive

################ testing today

Installed defraggler 2.21 on c:\Program Files\defraggler on SSD drive

Started Defraggler 2.21

within 3 seconds it crashed to BSOD

On restart the system gave this data
