What's in a name?

I just downloaded the latest free version v5.00.5050 of ccleaner from here.

The file it saved to my hard drive is named ccsetup500_exe which obviously isn't an executable.

I had to change the name to .exe to get it to run (Win 7 Pro, 32-bit).   :o

As a test, I downloaded it a second time and it still mis-named the file.

OOPS!!

Usually this is a error in your browser that causes this

ADVICE FOR USING CCleaner'S REGISTRY INTEGRITY SECTION

DON'T JUST CLEAN EVERYTHING THAT'S CHECKED OFF.

Do your Registry Cleaning in small bits (at the very least Check-mark by Check-mark)

ALWAYS BACKUP THE ENTRY, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU'LL BREAK IF YOU DON'T.

can't replicate.

your link takes you to the correct download page on Piriform, but the Download button takes you to FileHippo - very strange,

the download buttons for the other two downloads on that page take you to Piriform.

once on FileHippo, all bets are off as they now do weird stuff with their so called download buttons, which generally are just wrappers for crap software.

I have Adblock running and the correct green download button show ccsetup500.exe correctly.

The Download button for the free version on the Piriform page is coded for http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner but the other two Download buttons are both coded http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/professional. So I have no control over where the file is coming from.

Did Piriform outsource downloading the free version to FileHippo? And if they did, they should get FileHippo to fix their page. There's only one Download button on the FileHippo page that offers ccleaner. The others are all for junkware.

You can see in attached jpg the exact file name that's being offered when I click the Download button, so it's not on my end (IE11, Win 7 Pro) and clearing browser cache, cookies etc, doesn't change the name of the file that's offered.

Thanks for your input.

very strange as, when I click your link, it takes me to Piriform, click their green button, takes me to FileHippo, click their Download Latest Version green button and I get the .exe file, not the _exe file.

I'm using FF with adblock and ghostery, win8.1

FileHippo to our knowledge or hunch has always been the official mirror or download site and has for years. I think the non-working _EXE extension your screenshot shows needs to be something for FileHippo to fix on their side.

I just worked through the steps starting from the link in my OP and now FileHippo is correctly offering ccsetup500.exe. So it appears they fixed the error of their ways. :P

But it still doesn't explain why the Piriform site is linking directly to FileHippo for the free version, when in the past it always offered me the free version from their own site, especially since I don't like FileHippo.

Thanks everyone.

It doesn't, actually.  I just tried to download CCleaner 5.0, and the download link

http://download.piriform.com/ccsetup500.exe

gave me a 'Server not found' message on all browsers.  I actually had to go to Filehippo to download the installer.

strange.

the OP gives this link; http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download?upgrade

which goes to FileHippo.

on the piriform site; http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download

you go to Piriform for downloading.

@OP; where did your link come from?

I got to that page by clicking the "Check for updates" link on the main page in the previous version of ccleaner that was installed on this PC. Don't remember the version number but it was the version immediately before v5. This is a brand new PC and I only installed ccleaner on here for first time ~2 weeks ago.
