Task Bar Jump List?

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium and am having problems on booting up. Every time I press power, Windows starts to boot, gets to the coloured boxes, screen goes blank (not blue), reboots and a DOS like screen appears with options to start in 'safe mode or normally' then an error message says "Windows was not shut down properly". If allowed to boot normally, all is well. When I run CCleaner, it takes forever to work through something called Task Bar Jump Lists. What are Task Bar Jump Lists - I didn't even know I had them. Some programmes (mostly games) take over 15 minutes to launch. Are these issues related? I seem to have this problem recurring whenever I run a Windows update. I've got Sophos virus protection and have run Spybot Search & Destroy - nothing found. Be gentle, I am a rank amateur newby.

MSI Afterburner

New version of MSI Afterburner released (2.2.0 beta 10).
Here's the release notes & download link:
http://forums.guru3d...900&postcount=1

1. Added AMD Tahiti graphics processors family support
2. Added core voltage control for reference design AMD RADEON 7970 graphics cards with CHL8228 voltage regulators
3. MSI On-Screen Display server has been upgraded to version 4.3.0. New version gives you the following improvements:
1. Added new profile settings allowing to limit the framerate independently during gaming and during videocapture. Limiting the framerate during gaming can help to reduce the power consumption as well as it can improve gaming experience due to removing unwanted microstutteing effect caused by framerate fluctuations. Limiting the framerate during videocapture can improve resulting video smoothness
2. Added Vector 3D On-Screen Display rendering mode support for OpenGL applications
3. Added Raster 3D On-Screen Display rendering mode support for multithreaded OpenGL applications (e.g. ID Software's Rage)
4. Added workaround for AMD Direct3D driver issues causing OSD to be invisible in Direct3D8 and Direct3D9 applications when using Raster 3D On-Screen Display rendering mode
5.
4. Now unofficial overclocking can be enabled without typing in the EULA into the configuration file. In this case the EULA is displayed and you're forced to accept it during MSI Afterburner startup
5. Added power user oriented command line switches allowing to extend Overdrive clock limits on AMD graphics cards attached to Windows desktop

I'll wait for the final version (2.2.0), before reinstalling Windows I had (final) 2.1.0 installed.

A large ini such as this one can cause a slower startup for ccleaner (far more noticable on older/slower machines) and users may wish to manually remove entries they do not need from the file if they feel this lag time is too great.

Please bear in mind that these entries are NOT endorsed or supported in any way by the developers of CCleaner, and should be considered "beta."

That being said, they can (though we do our best to prevent this) cause issues with various programs or your system as a whole.

Piriform is not responsible for any damages done to your computer, and I also ask that if you encounter an error/problem with an entry here, you post it in this thread to keep winapp2.ini related issues centralized.
To create a custom winapp2.ini file that only holds entries relevent to your computer, Alan_B has kindly created a batch file that will do this for you.

It requires that you save your ccleaner settings to an ini file (this option is found in settings - advanced)

simply download this file and place it in your CCleaner directory, then double click it and let it do its job. It will backup the old winapp2.ini and create a new one. This file will load much more quickly than the full file, and yield the same results!
FileKey/RegKey
*Warning=

[Name*]

This is the name of your entry, usually followed by a * for formatting purposes. This is what will appear in the Applications list within CCleaner.

LangSecRef=

This indicates where on the list of applications within CCleaner your entry will appear. Appropriate LangSecRef numbers are below.

Quote

LangSecRef
3021 = Applications
3022 = Internet
3028 = Safari

Detect/DetectFile

These values are what CCleaner looks for to check if it should return true on an entry. Eg. DetectFile=%WinDir%\ will return true because this points to your windows directory.
Environment Variables (below) are vastly preferred over direct paths (such as C:\*)

Detect= points to a registry key
DetectFile= points to a file or folder.
Detect Paths:
Quote

Default=False

It is preferred that Default be set to false because Default is the default setting of the tickbox (False=Unticked)
This is to ensure no one has any boxes ticked that they didn't want ticked.

FileKey1/RegKey1=

The FileKeys and RegKeys are paths of items you'd like to delete. When pointing to these, you must list the path (using the environment variables above) then use the pipe symbol | and have the filenames/registry keys after

Warning=

If there is something the end user should know about an entry, such as it resetting play counts in a media player, high scores on a game, add a warning= followed by the message.
Eg: Warning=This will delete all of your high scores.
This is considered a courtesy to the end user in helping making them aware of what they're deleting.

Remember, when posting, please test your entries before you post them, so you can be sure they don't harm the workings of the programs. Also try to post which operation system(s) you tested it with!

I found one old post on the forum about evercookies & CCleaner cleaning them. http://forum.pirifor...ie&fromsearch=1
Does CCleaner combat regenerative cookies like EverCookie?
Yes.

Haven't seen anything recent nor anything I remember in any release notes of new CCleaner versions. Surely, if the devs were confident it could handle them, they'd put it in the Features??

BUT, I've yet to find out how to identify these evercookies in Firefox (now v12). Maybe I've never gotten one, but I don't know exactly what to look for - where.

On one of Bruce Schneier's posts about evercookies https://www.schneier...vercookies.html
he mentions these possible locations they could be stored (but still doesn't say / show what the cookies look like).
ALSO doesn't say which browser these locations (below) would be for:

"Specifically, when creating a new cookie, it uses the following storage mechanisms when available:

Standard HTTP Cookies

Local Shared Objects (Flash Cookies)

Storing cookies in RGB values of auto-generated, force-cached PNGs using HTML5 Canvas tag to read pixels (cookies) back out

Storing cookies in Web History (seriously. see FAQ)

HTML5 Session Storage

HTML5 Local Storage

HTML5 Global Storage

HTML5 Database Storage via SQLite"

What do (might) evercookies look like in Firefox & where would these locations be - in the profile, in a folder on C:\ - similar to where Flash stores LSO cookies, or...?
Thanks!

Cleanmem memory manager

This is a response to the discussion in posts #457 through #461 of the thread "Freeware !"
http://forum.pirifor...showtopic=17921
I thought it was better to discuss Cleanmem in a separate thread.

So, cleanmem is a memory manager that uses Task scheduler to start every 30 minutes (the default setting). But the user can change that value by simply going to Task Scheduler and change that setting to whatever he/she wants it to be.

After it has started and has performed it tasks the program closes and doesn't start again until it's (re-)started again by Task Scheduler. Just take a look at Task Scheduler and you'll see Cleanmem has added a task to the Task list.

To be able to see what Cleanmem does the user can tell the program to record its actions in a log, a text file. That log reveals which processes (as in displayed in Task Manager) are curtailed in their memory usage by Cleanmem and by how much. And the default setting is that Cleanmem reduces/collapses the size of the System File Cache as well.

I DO see a significant difference in performance ! Previously, it could take Real Player a significant amount of time to start playing a *.mp3 file but after installing Cleanmem that time has been reduced significantly by, say 50 to 90%.

Cleanmem can be downloaded here:
http://www.pcwintech.com/cleanmem
Here the user can find a lot of additional program info.

And the most important thing: it's freeware !

Parental Control under Windows 7...

Hi, I guess I'm sort of new to Windows 7. I was testing the parental controls under this OS, just to see what it was like. You know how you put all this restrictions on one's account? - Well, you know how when you try to open a program under the account with parental control on, you get the window that says only admins can unlock this process for you, or something like that? Once you type in the any admins account's password(in this case there's only one admin account on my laptop) and it says always unlock, or always block. I click always unlock so I can always open the file without that annoying window popping up. So, my question is; once it's set to always allow, does this mean this account - with parental control on, has automatic admin authorization on that particular program?

Thanks in Advance.

I installed it there as it keeps all of the files in a single Folder structure and makes for easy email backups as I am also using the Mail extension.

How can I point CCLeaner to clear out the appropriate browser files when I run CC?

I have done some searching and reading here and there is no winapp.ini file in the CC installation folder. I have been reading about winapp2.ini but not sure how to define the portable Opera installation.

Can someone please assist me with this?

Thanks

PSR in Windows 7

I just found out about this today, it's pretty neat and useful. It's the Problem Steps Recorder, found by searching psr in Windows 7, and it records your mouse clicks and windows names, etc and compiles them into a file!

A single MHTML file

Although, it doesn't seem to record stuff like my typing %windir% in the run box. I'll have to look into that a bit more. Just thought anyone who, like me, hadn't heard of it yet, might like it!

Checkboxes for Uninstall Tool

Would be nice if you could add the ability to checkmark programs listed in the uninstall tool. The user could select multiple items, click Uninstall and after one uninstall completes, the next one automatically begins. An example of this can be seen in the program IObit Uninstaller. This would be useful for those who use the portable version on others' computers and use it to remove crapware such as toolbars and pre-installed bloatware.

Why does Drive Whiper only whip 219MB?

Dear everyone,

When I use Drive Wiper, under Tools > Drive Wiper, to do a Free Space Only wipe on my C: drive it it start but only does 219.401MB for some reason. Even though my 500GB harddrive has 214GB of freespace. So I was wondering how I get it to whipe the entire free space?

Secondary issue that might be related. Right clicking on my C: drive gives me 251GB used 214GB available. However when I count all the files I have up by hand it hovers around 65GB. Lets give it some room for error and make it 100GB. Thats a pretty big margin of diffrence between 100GB used and 214GB used. So whats happening?

Additional information:
Windows XP SP3
AMD Athlon 64 FX-62
3,5GB RAM
500GB Western Digital HDD
