Recovering Photos

I am trying to recover some deleted photos. I ran Recouva and it found thousands of files. I selected many .jpg files that were not in the temporary internet file, After recovering these files almost all cannot be opened. Most of what is open is junk. I have not found the photos I am looking for. What am I doing wrong?

Reputation on Q&A sites

This is out of the ordinary.

I am a Yahoo! Answers user who has been helped by Recuva and recommends it to others. On Y!A, we regularly have to contend with spammers who set up accounts to advertise shady sites, in this case targeting users wishing to recover deleted files.

The spammers from Asoftech (and Tenorshare to a smaller degree) in particular are quite abusive, using dozens of "sockpuppet" accounts to thumb up and vote for their own answers. Recently they have targeted answers that recommend Recuva and other decent titles, using the same accounts to vote our answers down. This can lead innocent people to mistrust Recuva, and be tricked into downloading software that teases them with results that they have to pay to actually recover. (Some of these questions might also be posted by "spam feeders", which eventually distorts search results.)

I feel it is well past time to ask for help here. The best way would be to find and report abusive answers, while also supporting those who use Recuva. (While you're there, why not also help answer questions you might be knowledgable about?) The spammers' accounts are kept private so their answers cannot be directly searched, but a search for questions about "data recovery" and related phrases usually proves worthwhile.

There is a community effort to eliminate accounts that operate solely for spam:

A quick Google search can help find abusive answers:
https://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Aanswers.yahoo.com%20asoftech&tbs=qdr:w

Recovering files from damaged or reformatted disks - A question about the "scan for non-deleted files" option in Recuva

What exactly does this option mean? I thought the whole deal with Recuva is to search and recover deleted (yet non-deleted) files, as the information to recover them might still be there. Since the option says it's for damaged and reformatted disks, is that implying that a regular or deep search with Recuva will find files that I've deleted myself, but not the files that have been deleted by a formatting? I'm a bit dizzy when it comes to these things.

The reason I'm asking is because I decided re-launch and re-formatt an old and crashed (read: blue screen) computer a while ago, and then overwrite the complete hard drive with CCleaner and Recuva before I toss it away. I've wiped free space/overwritten the drive with CCleaner several times, as well as deep searched the drive with Recuva to see if there was anything left to be overwritten.

So the questions are: is this option necessary to use (since I never deleted the files on the drive myself before I formatted it; i.e. the formatting deleted them) - and even though I've used both CCleaner and deep search in Recuva to overwrite and securely delete all files after the formatting?

What exactly does this option mean?

Sorry if my explanation might sound a bit confusing, but I'm confused as well, lol. But I hope you get what I mean.

Suggestions for Recuva :)

I have some suggestions for Recuva:

- put "View Mode" options on the main window rather than just in "Options", "General" sometimes it's nice to switch between modes quickly.
- while previewing images add option to right click "copy to clipboard" the entire image (the same way as Firefox)
- add filter options so useless unrecoverable files are never listed or included as thumbnails.
- discard corrupted image files claimed as excellent they're technically damaged and should be labelled as so.
- do not include corrupted image files as thumbnails they're never going to be visible anyway.
- discard images files that have been simply moved to another location because they're not really deleted files.
- when typing in the filter box delay sorting the file list until typing stops after a few seconds (it makes Recuva run sluggish otherwise)
- date creation / date deletion and filesize filters to help locate specific files of interest.
- allow user definable file format headers or text search patterns so that "Deep Scan" may locate and recover lost data.
- allow files to be search if partition table is damaged / over written - currently Recuva will not "Deep Scan" under these conditions.
- rename deleted file names that are unrecoverable or when performing secure overwriting - leaving filenames unchanged can be just as incriminating as the files that had just been destroyed.

Recover files from printer scanner folder

Heey everyone!

Is it possible to recover files from a printer HDD? (I mean, not only with Recuva, but with another software or something...)

The folder on the printer is accessible via \\IPa.ddr.e.ss\file_share\scan
There were a lot of scanned PDF documents but suddenly the folder vanished and the HDD of the printer is empty now. Someone might have deleted or cutted the folder, whatever... Is there a way to recover the files?

Recuva always calls home

Can someone tell me why this program always calls home when you launch it? The reason I ask is that on all my computers, the program won't launch until the program "times out", or "gives up" trying to access the internet. It can't make it through my firewall, so it just hangs until it gives up, and then it finally launches.

I have Recuva options set to NOT check for updates, so I have no idea why it constantly has to seek out the Piriform website. Both CurrPorts and TCPView confirms Recuva trying to access (although, no Remote Address is given).

I have installed/uninstalled numerous versions of Recuva and all act the same. I have also run the program in "debug" mode and it also acts the same although it does launch a "check for updates error" window sooner than in non-debug mode.

Can someone explain why the program calls home, or how to disable it constantly checking for updates regardless of the option settings?

I love the program, but uhhhh... frustrating as all heck, as you might gather!

Thanks,

Hello everyone! I really need your help! I tried to recover files from my external 2 tb drive that I accidentally unplugged from my computer while the computer was scanning it. Recuva found every file that was missing. Those files also had the green dot next to them, showing they should be easily restored. The thing is, when I press restore, it restores files for 15 minutes, but only a portion of my files. The rest of files that weren't able to be retrieved, are then listed with " the system cannot find the file specified." next to each file. I'm so close to retrieving my data. Please tell me what I need to do to fix this error and get my files back. Thank you so much in advance!

I'm trying to recover photos from my Nikon camera's SD Card. It plugs in as a Portable Device on my computer (there's not issues I can access it). But Recuva doesn't detect it I think because it's a Portable Device and not a Drive. Is there a way to have it connect as a drive? Currently I connect the camera through a usb cord to the computer and it reads the SD card that way. Would it be different if I connected the SD card in a different way (it's removable from the camera)?

Major File completely disppeared from new External HD butthe data still utilizing the drive.

I purchased a new 2TB Seagate External HD...transferred 1.2 GB of data from my computer (Vista) and from a smaller Seagate HD (which has peformed 100%); shortly afterwards started to get "corrupted file" messages when accessing files on the new HD.
Windows "Properties" for the 2TB ExHD shows the usage on the new HD as 1.2 GB but only a only a small amout of data is available.
The major problem is that my largest file [ containing 1GB of sub-files ] doesnt appear at all now even in "corrupted and inaccessible" form.
Seagate offered a very expensive data recovery of up to $2400 but also recommended Recuva....so I did a deep Recuva scan and my missing file with sub-files does not even show up let alone be recoverable.
The 1GB file has to actually be there as it is shown as used capacity on the drive as Windows "Properties" for the 2TB ExHD is 1.2 GB.... but only 0.2 GB of small files is accessible.
..the issue is how to access the missing file.....
I guess I need advice as to how to use Recova for this purpose.
Thanks in anticipation.

What's the quickest way to recover files with unsaved directories?

Hi all...

I just opened a ticket wrt technical issues recovering files/directories, and I thought I'd start a topic here, in case anybody knows any tricks.

Here's what I said on the ticket:

Hi...

We had a problem with our mini-NAS: We had a Seagate Goflex 1TB drive (NTFS) that had been created and running under Windows 7 for several months, which we connected to a new Linksys E4200V2 via USB. Apparently we had several power glitches while running in this configuration, and the router lost a bunch of directory updates it was holding in memory (my best guess at this point). We might have lost some files too, but most of them appear to have been written to disk. We managed to recover a number of "undeleted" files using with their directory structure intact Recuva (free), but there are a bunch of other files we haven't found.

We bought the business version in the hopes that we could get some help using it that would speed up the process, as I've never used the product before and we're in time-critical mode.

I started a deep scan (which says it will take many hours), but I still don't know enough about the product to know the fastest way to retrieve the right files once I have the scan results, and I'm guessing there's going to be a lot to search through. Also, is there something I can do that would be faster than a deep scan? Will we be able to recover subdirectories that were saved but the higher-level directory wasn't (assuming the E4200 did this)?

We're a photography studio, and our process involves creating a new directory for each customer and filling it with photos (copied from the camera flash card), then running a product called ProSelect to create an album and let customers select their favorites and order products. Our orders are currently maintained manually on paper, using filenames of photos. When we run a deep scan, I'm guessing we're not going to get filenames (I've already recovered everything I could without a deep scan), but ProSelect saves low-res copies and filenames of the original images in its albums, so I'm hoping we can reconstruct the directory structure by comparing jpeg's with thumbs.

Albums are saved with an extension of .psa, supposedly "compressed", so I doubt that Recuva would be able to identify the type, but most of the unidentified file types will probably be lost albums. Is there some way I can search through the results for unidentified file types only? Some way to search by other <del class='bbc'>thinks</del> things, such as the last update date?

I don't know what the turnaround time on tickets is, but I've got to go buy an UPS, I'll be checking back in perhaps an hour or 2.
