Hi. I don't understand I cannot see (and so recover) some files I just deleted from my trash. But the fact is, I understand how Recuva works (it recovers files which do not have been overwritten by other files) and so I can not understand why these kinds of files can not be recovered .
Recovering an over-written file?

Hi,

Recently I was continuing work on a word document I had previously started. The previous save was on both my hard drive and a usb key. When I saved my newest work, I went to back it up on my usb, but instead of copying from my hard drive to my usb, I accidentally copied from my usb to my hard drive, which just saved over everything I had just written, putting me back where I had been before I started that day.

I hope thats not too confusing. Basically I know Recuva can't help me get back deleted files, but can it help me in this case, where I've saved over my work? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Nick

Sorting in thumbnail view?

Just as a feature suggestion, it would be great if we could sort (maybe as a right-click menu option?) when in the thumbnail view. Often, I find it would be beneficial to sort by Size or Last Modified Date or Path when in the thumbnail view. (I actually thought that this used to work by switching to List View, doing the sorting, and then switching back to Thumbnail view -- but that doesn't appear to be the case in the current version -- so I'm not sure if it just no longer works that way or if I'm just remembering wrong.)

In any case, just wanted to throw that out there. Thanks!

- John...

Recuva's list of junk photos

Ran Recuva and noticed that every newspaper photo, including their ads showed up during a scan of my "C" drive. I read online newspapers every morning, but had no idea they were attaching junk that would "adhere" to my hd.

Am I to understand that these photos/ads are imbedded forever after I view them? Is there any way to prevent this? Surely, all this junk is taking up good usable memory space.

OK...I admit I'm technically challenged but had good luck so far since I bought my pc in 2006 with only a couple minor glitches; I'm aware of "cookies", add ons and pop-up ads certainly, but didn't know everything I ever scanned online stays on my pc, even stuff I don't recall having looked at, i.e., auto ads, real estate promos, entertainers and celebrities, photos of politicians, and people's photos that I don't have a clue as to their identity, not to mention all the miscellaneous icons and bits and pieces that I don't even recognize .

How do I get rid of it, and can Recuva help me? Try not to laugh too hard, ok?

Scanning for "lost" partitions

Recuva works great! On drives & partitions it can detect.

One feature I would love to see is the ability to scan for a "lost" partition (Recuva cannot recover from drives it cannot see!).
It happens at times, that the NTFS or FAT32 MFT becomes corrupted, causing the drive to suddenly appear as "RAW" & blank!

This is very frustrating, because sometimes that represents hundreds of gigs of files! Can you add the ability to scan for "lost" partitions so the user can select a partition to recover, then start the recovery from that partition Recuva found? You can download a demo of Handy Recovery to see what I mean!

Sometimes that is the difference in being successful & having 0 files to recover at all!

Thanks!

P.S. I intend to check & see if Recuva can recover from password protected user accounts. I know Handy Recovery can, & it amazes me that in windows, a password protected account simply generates a "access denied" or some message like that when you left click the password protected user account, in addition to showing the properties as blank/0 mb when you right click that user & choose properties! However, when you enter the password & log-in, it seems fine & it has "all" the space back?

Running Handy Recovery makes it easy to recover from password protected accounts that either you don't have the password to, or their password protected account became corrupted so that it no longer "logs in" like it used to. I do hope Recuva has this feature, so I will check later on.

Thanks!

If only Recuva could run unattended

Hello,

Recuva is as close as I've come to finding a perfect utility. It does exactly what it says, does it efficiently and quickly. Does it way better than most of it's competitors (most of which you have to pay for). So how can you improve on perfection?
If only it had an option to run without needing user intervention? There have been times when I wanted to run it on a machine. I knew what type of files I wanted to find, the dates they were deleted and which drive it was on. But I wanted to do this in the background or in the night or just schedule it, but I could not use Recuva. I had to use 'PhotoRec', which did what I needed but I'd have preferred to use Recuva.

You already have a config/ini file. I should be able to put the recovery directory and file types to recover in there . The only issue would be choosing the filesystem to scan. Most times it would be 'C:' drive. Hopefully if you implement this I would also be able to choose other filesystems or USB drives!!

The one other nice to have (or 'Holy Grail' even) is scanning network mounted drives!!

Thank you in advance. I look forward to the PERFECT utility.

Dear friends, since Recuva provides the feature of making files unrecoverable, what about making them really, really unrecoverable by also deleting their file names?
Going Open Source

Recuva is a very useful tool; also, as far as I know, it's the only free recovery tool for windows: all competitors offer only crippled trialwares, and it is a nightmere when you have a not working system, and need to download quickly a recovery tool.

My suggestion is: since Recuva is already free, why not releasing source code, too? It will have many advantages, IMHO:
- some users feel that a freeware is less powerful than a commercial software: instead, an open source tool is perceived as a tool for nerds, really powerful.
- an open source Recuva would allow third-party developers to write plugins and extensions: i.e. a plugin to identify and reconstruct a specific file format, or a plugin to work on special devices (like magneto-optical drives)
- an open source program would be easily ported on other platforms (Mac, Linux)
- with a GPL license, all improvements added by third-party developers have to be GPL, too, so Piriform would be able to integrate the best new features in the official version
- An open source Recuva would be listed on all sites promotin free software (and it would be easier to find, since it would be the only easy-to-use recovery tool in its category): that would bring more users to Piriform.
- The availability of source code would help many programmers to understand better how file systems and drives work, and that would help all software development

In that way, I think that Recuva could become THE recovery tool, and overcome all competitors.

Bad Sectors

Right.... Had tonnes of problems with the drive but the long and short of it is that I ended up doing a quick format on the drive... not a major issue, before it gets to 1% of scanning, Recuva finds over 51000 files

However, after a while, the PC gets a BSOD and reboots. Taking a look at the Windows event log, it seems that there has been hundreds of drive errors with bad blocks. As it's found the 51000 files, I presume that the data is not on these bad blocks and so I dont need to use Recuva to scan them.

Is there any way to tell Recuva to ignore the bad blocks?

Thanks in anticipation...
